Verve Records released Among The Oak & Ash in which Josh Joplin partnered with singer-songwriter Garrison Starr, drummer, Bryan Owings, and the late bassist, producer, Brian Harrison (Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller, Shelby Lynne) to make a simple record of the songs he grew up with. Time Out New York described it as, “A lush re-visitation of Appalachian murder ballads.” and Vanity Fair hailed it as “Gorgeous!”
He continued to examine the songwriting and musical possibilities of retelling age-old stories at the heart of America’s roots music on Devil Ship, this time with troubadour David Mayfield, members of Ghostfinger, Ri¢hie, Paleface, and extraordinary songstresses, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Lucy Wainwright Roche, and Bailey Cooke as well as many others.
Devil Ship was called one of the weirdest and wildest and most unique folk albums of 2013 by Paste Magazine. All of the songs are a response to the American song tradition and are sung from a different perspective.
Among The Oak & Ash has recorded a third album and will be releasing it in the spring of 2018.
